Many community and professional organizations have ongoing opportunities available for Girl Scouts. AFFIRM Event

AFFIRM, Adolescent Females Finding Identity Respect and Merit, is a special event for sixth through eighth grade girls, their mothers, mentors, teachers, and friends. The AFFIRM program offers a variety of workshops on issues facing girls in this age range, as well as a special session for adults. This event takes place in January and is $5/girl. Arts Soup

The Bakken Museum Wizard Workshops

Explore the mysteries of science with three different electrifying 75-minute workshops and/or a guided tour. Girl Scouts become wizards as they participate in demonstrations, construct replicas of historical scientific devices, and bring science to life through interesting stories about scientists and their discoveries!

Workshop Topics – Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts
Magnets – 1, 2, 3! Explore the fascinating world of magnetism! Learn how magnets “play” together and be part of a magnetic tug-o-war! Every wizard will build a magnetic toy she gets to take home.

3rd Grade Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts
Abracadabra! Explore electric circuits and all the different ways to turn lights on and off. Learn how switches can be used for everything from burglar alarms to magic tricks. Every wizard will build a secret switch to illuminate a magic wand they get to take home.

Sparks and Shocks! Create static electricity and use it to make your hair stand up, enchanted confetti dance, and sparks fly. Every wizard gets to make their own static electricity generator to take home to continue doing experiments ranging from bending water to shocking drinks.

Tours – Daisy through Junior Girl Scouts
Shocking Good Fun! Take a fun-filled (and even educational) 90-minute tour that includes a hair-raising experience in our Static Party Room. See and hear electric fish! Experience the wonderful, frightening, fascinating story of Frankenstein through a multi-media exhibit. Find out how the “body electric” was discovered and life-savers like “heart shockers” were invented.

Candy Lane

Who doesn’t love candy? Come discover the history of some favorites! Candy Lane, located at the corner of Valley Creek Road and Woodbury Drive in Woodbury, Minn. has fun items not seen anywhere else. Troops/groups take a 60-90-minute tour around the store, viewing products, including old-time boxes of candy still in existence, and share interesting history about some of the products. No trip would be complete without samples of some of the candies too! Optional activities include: Candy Pizza - each guest makes their own Candy Pizza which starts with a caramel crust, chocolate or caramel sauce and candy toppings! $2.49 plus tax each. Cookie Party - select your cookie shape and flavor from our selection and we’ll freshly bake them and have frosting bags and candies ready for decorating. Cinco de Mayo – Minnesota’s Spiciest Celebration!

Saint Paul’s award-winning, family-friendly, Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is one of the country’s 10 largest Cinco de Mayo events celebrating Hispanic/Latino culture. The event features ethnic foods, live entertainment, children’s activities, a colorful parade, and much more. The Children’s Area, located in Parque Castillo on the Westside of St Paul, is coordinated in partnership with Girl Scouts and strongly encourages youth to participate in the planning and implementation of activities for the area. Clay Camps

Clay camps are led by Laura “The Potter” Lounsbury who is a full-time potter, instructor, and writer. She has taught children about clay for more than 14 years. She lives/works out of an old general store in Silver Creek, Minn. To visit her studio, please call 320-963-3823.


CLIMB Theatre

CLIMB Theatre is a children’s education touring theatre that presents plays for all ages to help “propel young people toward actions that benefit themselves, each other, and the community.” Play topics include bullying, harassment, community action, body image, friendship, respect, and appreciating differences. Crex Meadows Wildlife Area

Crex Meadows Wildlife Area is located just north of Grantsburg, Wisc. Troops/groups learn about nature and our connection to it as well as meet the requirements for the specific Try-Its and Badges, through crafts, games, activities, outside hike/tour of wildlife area. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars (optional).

Dog Sledding

Basic Program: Your adventure begins with an exciting introduction to dog sledding. Learn the skills it takes to care for a team of dogs. After that, try your hand at mushing!

Advanced Program: This program is designed for girls and adults that have already attend the Basic Program at Paw-Tuck-A-Way. After a brief introduction girls will mush on a dog sledding course.

East Metro Music Academy (EMMA)

EMMA is a non-profit community music school currently serving more than 325 students of all ages from the Greater Saint Paul area. Options include individual lessons at East Metro Music Academy studios, and group classes at eight neighborhood locations. EMMA instructors are among the finest music teachers and performers in the region, teaching a range of musical styles including classical, pop, jazz, rock and folk. Financial Literacy Program Resources from Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating and inspiring young people to value business, economics, and free enterprise to improve the quality of their lives. JA has programs for all grade levels from kindergarten through high school which can be presented by troop/group leaders or other adult volunteers in a variety of settings including troop/group meetings. Each JA program has unique goals and objectives and well-prepared instructional materials for each activity. The materials include age-appropriate learning activities for the girls and a complete presentation guide for the adult volunteer. JA provides all programs at no cost to the Girl Scouts.
Participation Requirement: Materials are provided for a minimum of 10 girl participants. Adult volunteers must complete a one-hour volunteer training (JA offers volunteer trainings at a variety of locations and times) to receive materials.

Elementary School Program
Ourselves – Kindergarten – Students are introduced to basic personal economic issues and the roles individuals play as workers, consumers, and family members.

Our Families – Grade 1 – Students learn about the role of families in the local economy, the jobs they have, and their economic needs and wants.

Our Community – Grade 2 – Students take part in activities that demonstrate the responsibilities of and opportunities available to citizens in their economic community.

Our City – Grade 3 – Students conduct business operations, make city-planning decisions, and examine economic development issues.

Our Region – Grade 4 – Students learn about state economies, the economic resources of regions, and decisions businesses must make about buying and selling resources.

Our Nation – Grade 5 – Students participate in activities that enhance their understanding of how a business operates within the U.S. economy, including management marketing, production, and sales presentations.
JA Dollars and $ense – Grades 3-5 – In an after school setting students learn financial and business skills through innovative activities and games that focus on earning, spending, and saving money.

Middle School Program
JA Economics for Success – Provides practical information about personal finance and the importance of identifying education and career goals based on a student’s skills, interest, and values.

JA Global Marketplace – Provides practical information about the global economy and its effect on students’ lives. The program illustrates how countries’ resources affect their cultures, governments, and economy. It also examines the benefits of international trade key global economic issues.

JA Enterprise In Action – Teaches students the principal characteristics of the American economic system and the role of business. Students learn the steps in organizing a business and producing and marketing a product. They also study the social responsibilities of business and the role of government in the U.S. economy.

High School Program
JA Success Skills – Focuses on developing students’ interpersonal effectiveness. Through an assessment, students identify the strengths and unique potentials of their interpersonal skills, and examine how their skills match careers of interest to them, develop resumes, and practice their skills in mock job interviews.

JA Personal Finance – Students learn to make informed decisions about the effective use of income to reach personal financial goals. This program is a unique online curriculum, which integrates a variety of Internet-based activities with the financial concepts that are necessary for student success.

JA Titan – This is a web-based business simulation where students learn how to make decisions about price, production, capital investment, marketing and research, and development for a fictional Holo-Generator.

JA Company Program – Students operate their own company as part of a school-based organization, club, or classroom enterprise or as an after-school activity. During a semester or over 15 weeks, they sell stock to raise capital, elect officers/management teams, buy materials, market a product or service, pay a dividend to stockholders, and liquidate their company.

Multi Age Levels
JA Job Shadow – introduces students to careers through one-day, on-site orientations in the workplace. (Most often available for middle school and high school students).


Fossil Field Trips

Hunt for fossils in an ancient sea! Learn how fossils were formed and preserved by geologic events. These events can take place either at the Twin City Brickyard (located in Lilydale Regional Park) or at Shadow Falls (near the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul). These programs can be adjusted to meet the needs of specific ages. Junior Girl Scouts will complete activities #2 and #9 of Rocks Rock Badge. Program fee is $20 per hour. Field trips to the brickyard require a fossil hunting permit and additional fee (minimal) through St. Paul Parks and Recreation. Girls in grades 7 through 12 are invited to the sixth annual Girls Rock the Capitol event sponsored by the Minnesota Women’s Consortium. Green Jungle Family Center

Treat your Girl Scouts to an afternoon of “Jungle Fun!” Enjoy tasty pizza, games, and more at the Green Jungle family Center, located in Apple Valley, Minn.. Harriet Alexander Nature Center

Badge/Try-It Programs:
Enjoy naturalist-led programs designed to complete Try-It and Badge requirements or provide seasonal recreation. Cost is $4 per Girl Scout, with a minimum of 10 participants. Groups can combine to meet this minimum. Daisy Girl Scouts - Nature in Action, Sound Sense. Brownie Girl Scouts - Animals, Eco-Explorer, Outdoor Adventurer, Senses, Watching Wildlife. Junior Girl Scouts - Finding Your Way, Weather Watch, Wildlife, Earth Connections (not winter) or Frosty Fun (winter only).

Junior Girl Scout Badge Overnights:
Dare to undertake five Junior Girl Scout Badges in one event! This overnight is a collaborative effort between troop/group leaders and nature center staff to earn Finding Your Way, Outdoor Cook, and Outdoor Fun, and to meet MOST of the requirements for Camp Together and Hiker!
Staff naturalists present two evening and one morning programs, while troop/group leaders and Girl Scouts handle the pre-trip planning, camp setup, meals, and evening campfire. Group sizes can range from 8-35 girls with one adult per 10 girls (after midnight, one adult per 20 girls.) Cost is $35 per girl with a minimum of $300. An evening snack is provided.

Recreational Overnights:
Girl Scout troops/groups enjoy an adventurous evening of nighttime hiking, campfire entertainment, nature crafts, or other fun activities! Staff naturalists present two evening programs: Night Sky, Habitat Hunt, Night Hike, Snowshoeing, Campfire Fun, Animal Nights, Nature Printing, Native Lore, or Bug Talk. Group sizes can range from 8-35 girls (3rd grade & up) with one adult chaperone per 10 girls (after midnight, one adult per 20 girls.) Overnights can be scheduled for Friday or Saturday nights, 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Cost is $30 per girl, with a minimum of $250. Price includes evening snack and continental breakfast.

Mad Science of Minnesota

Mad Science offers exciting and educational hands-on workshops (many are Try-It and Badge related) to help Girl Scouts explore the wonders of science. Best of all, Mad Science will come to your location! All workshops are $8.50 (with a $127.50 minimum fee). Troops/groups are encouraged to team up with other troops/groups. Magic of Dollmaking

Maplewood Nature Center

Land management service projects such as planting wildflowers, trees, and shrubs; mulching and maintaining rain gardens; stenciling storm-drains; and other service projects are available especially during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Mighty Mississippi Discovery Backpacks

Free, fun Mighty Mississippi Discovery Backpacks are great for families, groups, or individuals and have everything you need to start exploring the Mississippi River and its surrounding environment. The backpacks include cards with many activity ideas, fun tools such as binoculars, magnifying lenses, easy-to-use nature guides, and more. Mighty Mississippi Discovery Backpacks are developed by the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area of the National Park Service and offered in cooperation with partner sites. Minnesota Children’s Museum

Sparking children’s learning through play. The Minnesota Children’s Museum features four levels of hands-on activities including science, art, people and wildlife. Minnesota Historical Society

Alexander Ramsey House Tour
On troop/group outings to the Alexander Ramsey House in St. Paul, Girl Scouts hear and see what growing up was like for grandchildren Anita, Laura, and Alexander Ramsey Furness based on their letters, diaries, and photographs. Using these primary sources and more than 14,000 original artifacts, each room is decorated as it was from 1872-1900. Take a trip back in time with our expert costumed guides and learn how their lives compare to the Ramsey family and their Victorian household. A special extra is enjoying a cookie prepared in our wood-burning stove while learning about the Ramsey’s up-to-date kitchen.

Sibley House Historic Site Tour
Travel in the midst of the city to the picturesque setting where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers meet. Girl Scouts enjoy the Sibley House Historic Site; one of the state’s oldest settlements in Mendota where there still stands four simple limestone buildings from the fur trade era, (1825-1853). The site includes the home of Henry Hastings Sibley featuring the office of our first state governor, the 1843 fur company cold store, and the 1840 residence of longtime trader-turned-hotelier Jean-Baptiste Faribault. Guides unravel stories of the fur-trade era, uncover changes to the site and its structures, and lead Girl Scouts through the furnished interiors and exhibits. Site offers picnic grounds and gift shop.

North Star Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting

The North Star Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting, located at 2640 E. 7th Avenue, North St. Paul, offers guided tours of exhibits, programs, and special events. The Phipps Center for the Arts

The Phipps Center for the Arts, located in Hudson, Wisc., has celebrated the creative spirit for more than 20 years by offering exciting performances, outstanding exhibitions, and professional instruction for everyone. Pump It Up!

Pump It Up! is a great way to get some exercise and have some fun too! For Girl Scouts looking for an energy-burning, active and healthy outing, book your own private playtime at Pump It Up! Each location has indoor play arenas filled with colossal, colorful inflated play structures such as skyscraping slides, obstacle courses, inflated basketball court, bounce houses, and coliseums for boxing or jousting. Ramsey-Washington Watershed District

The Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District is excited to work with Girl Scout troops/groups on various watershed activities, including: pond and wetland cleanups, rain garden and shoreline weeding, shoreline planting, soil sampling, and more. New this year is the Saturday Weed of the Month at the Maplewood Nature Center. The first Saturday of the month, a weed is highlighted--through identification and possible uses (edible and otherwise). Reptile, Amphibian, Discovery Zoo

Scuba Diving

Do you know someone who would like to try scuba diving? This is a great opportunity for those who want to see if it’s as fun and easy as it looks. Scuba dive in a pool with an instructor. St. Croix River Backwater Canoe Adventure (day trip)

Canoe down the St. Croix River with naturalists from Warner Nature Center. Set out from the nature center first thing in the morning and learn a little about the history of the river as we wind our way though the mysterious backwaters in the canoe, spotting eagles, osprey, raccoons, and songbirds. Stop for lunch in an idyllic spot on the river and enjoy the view. The trip is led by two experienced naturalists and meets or exceeds Safety-Wise guidelines. Cost includes rental of canoes, PFDs, paddles, transportation to river from the nature center, interpretive program, and basic canoe instruction as needed. Basic canoe experience preferred. If so, Town Square Television offers low-cost certification courses (it sounds really official, but it’s really to make sure you know how to use the equipment properly) to teach our members how to use our facility and equipment to maximize their production efforts. Introduction to Community TV

Learn about the wide range of production opportunities available at Town Square Television. This one hour class covers channel and equipment use, provides an overview of Public Access and includes a complete tour of the Town Square Television facility.

Studio Production
Designed for beginning and intermediate producers, this two hour class takes you through TV production in a studio setting, including: production planning, equipment operation, and crew duties.

Digital Field Production

A two hour hands-on training helps you learn how to use DVC-15 digital camcorders for a high-quality production, along with basic audio and lighting techniques needed to acquire the skills to “shoot for editing.”

Basic Editing
Learn non-linear editing with Final Cut Pro, graphic generation, and dubbing to tape or DVD.

Mobile Production Truck
Learn the basic operation of our high-tech mobile production truck. The truck is equipped to produce multiple-camera coverage of sports, parades, and community events, with little or no post-production.


Travel Education Programs @ HI-MN

Hostelling International – Minnesota Council (HI-MN) offers an excellent program for those new to the complexities of international travel called World Travel 101. It covers everything from pre-trip planning, documents, money matters, rail travel and accommodations, to how to be a culturally sensitive traveler. In short, everything you need to make your trip more rewarding and culturally rich. World Travel 101 encourages global travel, provides insights on safe, healthy and affordable travel, highlights how to show appreciation towards other cultures and languages, and how to build a new generation of responsible and sensitive travelers. USA Karate

USA Karate offers quality professional martial arts instruction preschool ages through adults. USA Karate offers Girl Scouts the opportunity to experience and learn about martial arts through our martial arts badge workshop. These one hour self defense workshops are hosted at USA Karate locations. The Works
